No. But I will be there. Not soon, but in a bit.

[Speed is not in Ivar's skillset, being who he is. He's resigned himself to the fact he'll get there when he gets there when he's trying to go somewhere.]

[She unsheathed her dagger, holding it out to him. It had been sharpened, that much she knew how to do as well.]

[He takes it, flipping it back and forth in his hand with a fluid motion before spinning it around as well. He nods in satisfaction as he hands it back to her.]

Alright. Follow what I do. Hold it like this first.

[He holds it with the blade coming out near his thumb and his pinkie finger near the end of the hilt.]

This is the forward grip.

[Took the dagger, carefully arranging her hand so that she can mimic the grip. Fairly simple for a beginning.]

[She smiled, thrusting the dagger at the air, trying to demonstrate a way to attack but probably looking like the amateur that she was.]

Yes. There we go. This grip is used for more precise stabs and cuts, when you are looking to hit a certain area of the body like the throat or lung. Remember, always aim for the soft parts of the body. Anywhere there is a lot of bone, you won't be able to stab through very easily at first from lack of strength and training.

[Then he demonstrates a few motions, waiting for her to follow his lead.]

Wouldn't it take a keen eye to strike between the ribs? That would need some precision? [She's at least a quick study and manages to follow Ivar's instruction and stab as he demonstrated. She had cut her teeth in a few battles, but she never felt a warrior until now.] You would say the throat is better?

[She thrust again, shifting her feet to get a better stance.]

Yes. The lungs might be a bit beyond your current level. In your case, start off with the stomach. Most people are not going to go anywhere if you puncture their kidney or disembowel them

[He judges how tall she is, figuring out her range if she was to reach up and try to stab a man of average height in the throat.]

If you can reach, I would say to definitely try. Now copying the movements again, several more times.

[He shows her a few more basic stabs and slashes.]

[She manages to pick up the other moves he shows her. After a few hours of practice, she at least feels able to attack and protect when it is needed. He made a good teacher, something that isn't lost on her...nor the way he seemed able to read her so well, simply by her frame and stance.]

In truth, I cannot answer that. You can be the world’s greatest warrior, but against certain opponents, you will simply lose no matter what. But knowing the basics will help a great deal.

[He flips the blade in his own hand back and forth in first the forward and then the reverse grips.]

Tricks and fancy moves are for those who want to show off or start a conversation. Simple moves will go a lot further.

You are more honest than most would be. There are other men that would claim to be the greatest teachers. Whoever they trained would be dauntless in battle. [Honesty was better, even if it meant she was still vulnerable.] If you don't mind, I would be grateful to train more with you this week.

[Not that she has much else to do.]

The pointy end in tender flesh would win out against tricks.
